The Ballad of Redaing Gaol

17th October @ 2:15 pm - 3:00 pm
£17.50

The Ballad of Reading Gaol is a haunting two-person exploration of guilt, sin, punishment and the human capacity for Beauty and Suffering.

The Ballad of Reading Gaol is a two-person physical and theatrical exploration of guilt, sin, punishment and redemption, inspired by Oscar Wilde’s experience of imprisonment in Reading Gaol.

Drawing from Wilde’s poem and the true circumstances surrounding his two years in prison and the execution of a fellow inmate, the production places two performers inside a stark, ever-changing prison world. Through movement, text, sound and ritual, they move between Wilde, the condemned prisoner, guards, witnesses and ghosts, blurring the line between the individual and the collective.

Rather than focusing solely on the crime that brought the condemned man to prison, the piece asks what makes a person a sinner and who has the right to judge them. Wilde’s own experience of being publicly condemned for his sexuality creates a parallel between criminal punishment and social persecution, questioning whether guilt belongs only to the person who commits an act, or also to the society that chooses to condemn.

At its heart, the production is about the human capacity for violence, shame and judgement and the possibility of transforming suffering into art. Wilde’s poem becomes both testimony and resistance: an attempt to make meaning from trauma and to find humanity within a place designed to erase it.
